In addition to his successes in the commercial development industry, Mark Redmond was also a passionate volunteer and serviceman. In the summer of 1998, Mark was president of the parish council at St. Anthony on the Lake in Pewaukee. While serving on the council, Mark met Father Joseph Uhen, a Milwaukee native and an ordained Peruvian priest. Mark and Father Tom Venne, pastor of St. Anthony’s, met to discuss the possibility of creating a sister-parish relationship between St Anthony’s and Piura, Peru. The “Family-To-Family” program was thus created at St. Anthony’s, and quickly became Mark’s new passion in life. Mark and Father Uhen worked closely on a number of projects and together much progress was made. Today there are over 370 Peruvian families sponsored by parishioners from St. Anthony’s and several other parishes. Since 1999, a group of parishioners makes a mission trip to Peru every year. Father Uhen’s parish, consisting of 24 nearby villages, currently includes several chapels and has now grown to over 40,000 parishioners. The overwhelming majority of these parishioners are impoverished. Mark Redmond faced his biggest challenge in life in the spring of 2003 when he was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. Mark’s wife Kay, along with their two children Ryan and Kristie, cared for Mark at home. In June of 2005 he was admitted to Angels Grace Hospice. While at Angel’s Grace, Mark found peace and dignity in his final weeks of life. During this time, he and Kay were discussing how difficult it must be for the sick and dying of Piura to go through the same difficult death without the care and comfort of such a facility. It became clear to the family that a hospice should be built for the poor in Mark’s memory.

Mark Redmond passed away in June 2005. In lieu of flowers, the Redmond family requested donations go to the Mark Redmond Peruvian Fund for the building of a hospice in the Peruvian desert. Due to the generosity of so many beloved family members, business associates and personal friends, the funding of such a place became possible. Ryan moved to Piura to oversee the project and construction began in the fall of 2006. By August 2007 the hospice was complete and the first patients were admitted. Family members are encouraged to stay in adjoining rooms and help care for their dying loved one. The hospice charges no fee and the surrounding villagers donate meals and volunteer their time to clean and visit with patients. Nurses are sponsored by friends and family here and several local Peruvian physicians volunteer their services. Twenty rooms surround a private courtyard setting with a beautiful chapel in the center. Mark and his family believe that no one should die alone and everyone deserves the basic comforts during their last days on Earth. Thanks to a dream and so many generous friends, this final journey on Earth is now one with dignity and grace.
